Business coaching has become a massive industry over the past decade. There are coaches for fitness, mindset, leadership and business. Some of them are excellent.

But if you’re running a trade business, I don’t think the first question is whether you need a coach.
The first question is whether you need someone who understands the decisions you’re making every day.

Coaching Isn't the Problem

When most people think about business coaching, they picture accountability. Someone who keeps you on track, checks in every fortnight and makes sure you’re following through on your goals.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
The problem is, that’s often not where trade businesses get stuck.

The Decisions That Matter

Trade businesses rarely struggle because the owner isn’t motivated. Most tradies are already working harder than they should.
The real problems usually sound more like this.

- Should I put another crew on?
- Am I charging enough?
- Should I buy another ute?
- Do I really need an office?

There’s something reassuring about talking to someone who’s already made similar decisions. Not because they’ll always have the answer, but because they’ve seen the consequences before.

  • Sometimes it’s deciding whether to employ another apprentice.

  • Sometimes it’s improving your quoting process.

  • Sometimes it’s knowing when to say no to the wrong customer.

  • Sometimes it’s simply having someone you trust to bounce an idea off before making an expensive mistake.

  • Sometimes that’s a pricing conversation.
